Abstract

ABSTRACT

The objectives of this thesis are: to study the art of construction (Navakamma) in Buddhism, to study the role of Buddhist propagation through public service conducted by Venerable Phrakru Sophonboonyakhet (Som Sobhano), and to study the result of Buddhism propagation through public service conducted by Venerable Phrakru Sophonboonyakhet (Som Sobhano). However, this thesis is conducted based on qualitative research methodology.

Based on the research results, it was found that the art of construction in Buddhism involved the constructional of Senasana or living shelters, both permitted by the Buddha, Snch as Vihara or shrine hall, one-layer covered building, many-layers building, building without roof, cave-like building; and not permitted by the Buddha, Snch  as living sheters on unspecified sites.

For the role of Buddhist propagation through public service  conducted by Venerable Phrakru Sophonboonyakhet, he was professional, good at constructional work especially in constructing religious places and  handmade-excellence works. Moreover, he was a Buddhist spiritual leader for lay devotees and monastic members. Therefore, he not only expounded the noble teachings of the Buddha, but also stood as Thai cultural-ritual protector as he laid down the knowledge and his excellence tor the ned generation.

Last but not least, for the result of his role in Buddhism propagation through public service, this study found that by constructing several religious places and buildings, it became beneficial  to the people in the area. For instance, the shrine hall was used as the place to perform Sangha Kamma or activities of monastic orders; the people used a temple hall as a gathering place for meeting and public activities; many Buddha statues were kept in the well-decorated pagoda. More importantly, he also constructed a school building at Banpasang-pamuangvidaya, which has served as a learning place for the surrounding community.
